Church of St. Andrew Stratilates
The tiny church of St. Andrew Stratilates appeared in the southeastern part of the Kremlin at the end of the 17th century or beginning of the 18th century. It stands on the foundation of the Ladder Tower of the Church of Ss.Boris and Gleb, one of the most ancient (1167) and monumental constructions within the Kremlin walls, erected by a certain Sotko Sytnich, who was quite often identified with the legendary hero known as the merchant Sadko.
The church has a small cupola installed on a blank faceted drum, with a single-tier belfry rising above the pediment of the western facade. Inside, the church fragments of fresco paintings distinguished by rich ornamental motifs can still be seen and admired. Today the church is in need of restoration (see Restoration projects).
